Cycling against cancer
Encouraging journey through Iceland
Join Jürgen on his bike tour through Iceland in August 2025 to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer and encourage other sufferers and their families
The Project
By bike from Seyðisfjörður across the north of Iceland to Reykjavik
After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Jürgen decided to face life anew – on his bike, through the rugged beauty of Iceland. The three-week tour in August 2025 is much more than just a sporting challenge: it is a symbol of hope, perseverance and the strength to get back up even after serious setbacks. With this trip, Jürgen wants to encourage people and raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.

Goodbye Iceland: the end of a journey is always also a beginning
We had already thought it would be hard to say goodbye to Iceland. This morning, however, we realize that Iceland seems to be finding it just as hard to let us go. A few questions swirl around in our heads, questions we take with us onto the ferry: Have we changed?...
Stormy morning and warm hearts: Our last stop in Seyðisfjörður
The next morning greeted us with a stormy and cold day. We set off towards Seyðisfjörður, our last stop in Iceland before catching the ferry to Denmark. We didn't want to arrive too late, as the campsite could fill up quickly. We drove back via Egilsstaðir, taking the...
Fire jellyfish, puffins and the Northern Lights: a day full of magic
We wake up early and continue our journey down into the valley in high spirits. We're already overwhelmed and wonder how every day in Iceland can hold such unique and beautiful wonders. The sun is shining, the air is calm, and the valley welcomes us with perfect...
Slowing down in Fáskrúðsfjörður
Today we're taking it easy, processing yesterday's experiences, and honestly, we're just exhausted. The many kilometers, the nights in the tent, the emotional rollercoaster, and our aching bones all need some time, peace, and attention. We decide to stay another day...
29 degrees, an ice cream at the harbor, and the small but great joy of the moment
After all the intense days, we slept in unusually late today and found the campsite almost deserted. The sun was shining, it was peaceful, and we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in T-shirts and shorts. That alone felt like a small miracle. Later, we shared the hot tub...
When beauty shatters: Iceland’s south between wonder, reflection, and a sentence we won’t forget
The cries of seagulls wake us this morning. The campsite is nestled comfortably among rocks on a small meadow, and while we eat breakfast, we hear the murmur of the other campers. We drive to Reynisfjara Beach, where a gigantic spectacle awaits us: The waves roll...
From the lonely, hot river to the roaring sea: We travel to Vík í Mýrdal
The alarm clock rouses us from our tents at a time when many others at the campsite are still fast asleep. Getting up is particularly easy for us today, however, because we're incredibly excited about what awaits us. Thick fog hangs in the mountains, and a fine...
Between tears of joy and steaming springs: A new chapter of our journey begins
The next morning, nothing could hold Jürgen back – he had to go to Braud & Co.! Barely on his feet, he dashed off to the bakery, and even from afar, the aroma of freshly baked bread, sweet pastries, and cinnamon rolls filled the air. With bags overflowing, we sat...
When change brings new beginnings: From Þingvellir to Reykjavík
From the geyser, we set off for Reykjavík, but on the way, we make another stop at Þingvellir National Park. Here, at the place where the tectonic plates are breaking apart and drifting about two centimeters further each year, we feel the earth's power particularly...
Hot springs, cascading water and a geyser in the moonlight: Gullfoss & Strokkur
The weather had hardly improved by morning: it was raining, heavy clouds obscured the sky, and a fierce wind hit us as soon as we opened the cabin door. But Silke wasn't about to let that dampen her spirits and was enjoying the hot spring right next to our cabin. With...
About Jürgen
Jürgen is a father of three, pancreatic cancer survivor and Iceland enthusiast from Lübeck. After his cancer diagnosis, he decided to share his story and actively make a difference. Jürgen’s goal is to travel through Iceland by bike. You can find out more about the project here:
In Numbers
In the case of pancreatic cancer, it takes five years without a recurrence to be considered cancer-free – a period that requires patience, strength and confidence.
1,126 kilometers is the approximate length of the route Jürgen will be cycling through Iceland. Mývatn, Vík í Mýrdal and Raufarhöfn are some of his destinations in Iceland.
The importance behind the journey
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive types of cancer and is often only diagnosed at an advanced stage. With this project, Jürgen wants to raise awareness of important information about symptoms, risk factors and the importance of early detection, as well as pass on what helped him during his illness and recovery. Anyone can be affected, so it is crucial to get regular check-ups and look out for warning signs.
