After a stormy night, we start the new day in sunshine. For a while, we have the campsite almost to ourselves, but then one coach after another arrives with tourists who want to visit the canyon, and we are glad to pack up our things and continue our journey. We head deeper into the plateau, into a mystical landscape of rock and heath. Iceland has something very magical about it, one of the reasons why we were determined to cycle around the island after our cancer diagnosis.

Not only is the sun shining down on us today, but we are also enjoying the 40-kilometer descent towards Vopnafjörður. The town is small, located directly on a fjord, and with the warm temperatures, we actually feel like we are experiencing a bit of summer in Iceland. On the spur of the moment, we stop at a charming little bathhouse, about 70 years old, where we enjoy the bath and the hot pot at just under 40 degrees Celsius with a few Icelandic families. The campsite is cozy, still a bit windy, but the summer temperatures make up for everything. In the evening, Johanna and Mirja prepare vegan burgers with rice on the camping stove, accompanied by a salad. Together, we enjoy the evening, which will continue long into the bright night.
