This morning we wake up full of anticipation, because we’re finally heading north! Warm sunshine falls into our tents and puts us in a good mood as we wake up. Under a bright blue sky, we take down our tents, enjoy a relaxed morning in the sun, and fortify ourselves for the day ahead. Porridge with fresh berries and soup with rice noodles have become our favorite breakfast, not only filling us up but also warming us up for our bike tours.

First, we descend a small slope toward the swimming pool, then we find ourselves at the foot of a mountain that we affectionately call Little Peter because it lies right next to the merciless Hellisheiði. However, this mountain is much gentler and friendlier to us, so that we make it to the top with some effort, but much more relaxed. We stop along the way to collect birch mushrooms that we discover at the side of the road and are greeted warmly by passers-by. In good spirits, we continue pedaling up the mountain, taking frequent short breaks to enjoy the breathtaking, sweeping view over Hellisheiði and Vopnafjördür.

When we finally arrive in Bakkafjörður, we quickly realize that we don’t want to stay here: the place is deserted and we see almost no people, but instead eerily dressed scarecrows that give us goose bumps. A quick glance at the map shows us that Þórshöfn is only a few kilometers away, so we hop back on our bikes. We take a break at a beautiful old church, enjoy the view of the bay, and feel a great sense of gratitude once again that we are doing this tour.

The atmosphere in Þórshöfn is exactly what makes this day perfect: welcoming and friendly – we immediately feel completely at home! Especially because, as we set up our tent, we see that we have dogs as camping neighbors on both sides! After a delicious, home-cooked dinner, we end the day in Þórshöfn with a walk down to the harbor. The sun slowly sets on the horizon and we know: we are exactly where we want to be.
